How to take care of your mental health during COVID- 19

Are you feeling stressed in the current situation? Are you anxious or worried about what is going to happen in future? Have you lost your job or Are you having financial difficulties?

One thing you must remember in all the above situation that healthy mind creates healthy future. According to the World Health Organisation, Mental health is a state of well-being of an individual to cope with the normal stresses of life and can work productively and fruitfully.

In the Current COVID-19 situation it is normal to feel stress and be worried and anxious. While social distancing and isolation in place people have become more secluded. In these tough times, it is extremely important to take care of mental health.

Before COVID, most of us have always been socially dependent. Now we are facing a global crisis in which people have become isolated and emotionally vulnerable. Anxiety and stress have become global emotions. We might develop a vaccine against the virus, but the biggest challenge is to overcome of this emotional downfall. Because Post-COVID is going to be as challenging as fighting the disease.

Many People were already suffering through fear, anxiety and stress in their life due to personal problems and then the epidemic started. Later, came lock down, which was something this generation had never experienced before. Some people are living alone, some people are living 24*7 with a partner or with their families and some are managing their children as well. People have already become emotionally depleted and with that depleted states, they are living together, which has made living more tough.

So, what do we do about it? How are we going to handle this situation? What can we do in the free time and How to prevent ourselves from anxiety and stress?

Well, I have some tips for you. Read it and follow it as much as you can

  1. Energize you mind

This time can be highly utilized to build our emotional immunity system. Use this time in a positive manner. There is a visible crisis going outside which we may conquer but people often forget that there is an invisible crisis going on inside as well which is mental health crisis.

In science, Stress is Pressure divided by Resilience , The more pressure you will take, more stress will increase and more inner resilience you will build reducing that pressure,  lesser the stress will get.

Well how are you going to do that. It is simple and everybody knows

  • Think less, and think right
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Exercise
  • Correcting sleep cycle

Easy and you already know about it. We have always complained that we don’t have  time, we can’t do it, we don’t have someone to accompany and the list goes on. Well, a little credit goes to COVID, we have time now, we can do it and we have family members/ friends/ housemates/, by the way which we think we are stuck with, to energize our mind.

  • Take care of the First hour and the last hour of the day

Everyone loves a bit of extra sleep, but what we are doing is disturbing the basic rhythm of our mind. By making small changes in lifestyle habits we will eventually build emotional resilience and a perfect mind. Has it ever happened to you that you got up early in the morning and you feel a sense of achievement? Imagine what could happen if daily your day starts with a sense of achievement.

Now many of you can ask, What I am going to do waking up early in the morning?  I have my whole day.  So, imagine, if you get a good and healthy breakfast in the morning don’t you feel satisfied and happy for the whole day. That is your physical diet but what about you emotional and mental diet.

Things you can do in the first hour of the day are-

  • Don’t check your phones and laptops during the first hour
  • You can use this first hour for energizing you mind by doing yoga or meditation or combination of both
  • If you are a spiritual person, you can use this time to connect yourself spiritually
  • Create a positive thought about yourself for example, I am happy, I am blissful, I am calm and polite, I am self-aware etc
  • And the last thing is a no for newspapers, don’t read newspapers in the first hour because you must have good quality content consumption in the morning.

Same with the last hour,

As many of the readers might know already that during the day our mind stays in beta+ stage but in our sleep, we stay in delta stage, so it takes time to reach from beta+ to delta. So, the things you can do are

  • Sleep early
  • Disconnect yourself from work 2 hours before sleeping because mind must slow down
  • Disconnect yourself from your phone 1 hour before sleeping
  • What you can do is sit with family, have a chat or watch and listen to spiritual or motivational content, anything which gives a soothing effect in the last hour of the day

During the day

During the day all you must do is traffic control of your mind. After every hour take a minute pause, take a deep breath and revise that positive thought, if you have created one in the morning.

It is same as phone chargers, you have once charged completely in the morning, now if you are going to put it on charge every hour is the battery going to die? never. Similarly, you mind will be calm, blissful and fully charged for the whole day.

  • Read a book

Some people might be having lots of free time and nothing to do, well you can read books. It is the most quality time pass you can do

Conclusion: –

Taking care of our mind and mental health is easy. You just change what you think you are doing wrong, and it is easy to figure out.

  • Energize your mind
  • Take care of the first and the last hour of the day
  • Recharge every hour of the day

By doing this, I guarantee, you can feel a sense of achievement, positivity and strong mental health within weeks.
